[NA] 10497 Galaxy Explorer available for pre-order
Posted by CapnRex101,
10497 Galaxy Explorer is now available for pre-order in North America, costing $99.99 USD or $129.99 CAD.
The set will be dispatched on the 1st of August, although pre-orders do contribute to qualifying purchases for 40567 Forest Hideout.

That's pretty awesome on Lego's part that you can pre-order this set and have it count for Forest Hideout. I'm sure many people who want one would want the other.
Cancelled my Nano Gauntlet pre-order, re-pre-ordered it along with this, threw in a Muppet, and now I get the Forestman set! Win win!
Pre-ordered two, got the Forest Hideout GWP. Can’t wait til they ship!
No preorder in Europe :(
If there was a set for me to break my rule about never paying full price, this one is it. Although I have more than one 497, I also bought two of these. Funny, we just did a video about Classic Space MOCs too. I hope I can keep the second one a secret from my daughter who turns 8 in August right after its release — she is the youngest Classic Space fan in the world, of that I am certain.
If you pre-order, remember to throw in some set (no matter how cheap) that is in stock so that you’ll get the GWP before they run out.
Looking at the Justifier & this....we’re paying $70 because it says “Star Wars” and has about 900 less pieces. -_-
If you zoom in, it looks like the bricks are printed, I don't see sticker lines. Hope this is indeed true.
Oh my gosh it’s beautimous!!!
I will have to preorder right now!

You guys are killing Independent StyleCounselor!
Ugh, this is too good a deal to miss...
Does anyone know if they have updated the payment page to add a selection for payment by 'placing strong teenage son in indentured sevitude?'
Just looked at the box image of this set, and was shocked to see that beautiful design with "18 and up" on it. An 18+ set that doesn't have an ugly plain black box? The LEGO marketing team must have felt physical pain when they saw that!

Not to mention, this one looks really, really good. Not like the Justifier's designers had much to work with though -- the ship is really, really ugly in The Bad Batch.
Did anyone else not even know that this was a thing?
Pre-order seems to be a thing in Australia as well.
Sad there is no preorder in Europe. At least the Swedish price for the Galaxy Explorer seems fair. Expected more so this is a pleasant surprise

My son turns 8 in August and loves my classic space collection... So you just beat me.
@gbergevin & @MeisterDad: One of my nephews turns eight in September and while I don't really have a Classic Space collection, he does love the 5007090 I gave him when it turned out to be too small for me.
Ah, wish I knew about preorder counting earlier today.
Aw well, did want the sets I did get.
Preordered 2 (one for me, one for my son) and got the Forestmen's Hideout. This will be my 3rd different Galaxy Explorer set without actually owning the original (60 Years of the Brick 40290 , and Micro Scale Psae Cruiser 11910 ). I came home from camping a day early and saw this news. I was expecting to miss the Foresmen's Hideout until I saw this preorder.
My son was so excited to get red and white spacemen to round out his collection.
Interesting. the original was $32 in 1979 which adjusted for inflation is about $130 USD now. so even if it WASNT a much more detailed set with many more pieces it would still be worth it

today I learned 1254-1022=900!
Pre-ordered as soon as I saw a tweet about it earlier. FOMO gets me quick these days with shortages.

Pre-ordered x2??
Question in passing. When do you record your Lego purchases on Brickset? Personally, I record them as I get the order confirmation (not on reception). Other practices out there?

I only record a set once I have it in hand. Just in case.
I went ahead & did a pre-order on this since the Forest Hideout GWP is still active. Added the City Barn to get over the threshold. Still waiting on my order from earlier in the week to ship. I know the PAB will take longer but I thought Santa's Sleigh would've shipped by now.
The original was and is one of my holy grails, and anything Classic Space has the power to make my heart bear a little faster. I’ve preordered this (along with a Star Wars set of wanted and didn’t yet have, qualifying for the Forest Hideout) and eagerly await this treasure.
OMG OMG OMG - ordered
Would be nice to be able to pre-order the castle... The forest hideout gwp would have been a great additional set for it... And make that £345 price hurt a little less...

D’oh! Haha...I swear I double checked the piece count but clearly I had a different set in my head. I’m bad at math but not that bad.
A little bit cheeky that they offer pre-order on the seemingly non-exclusive Galaxy Explorer, but not on the exclusive Lion Knights' Castle. Almost as if they're capitalising on the excitement for the set that is likely to be available cheaper elsewhere on the same day or soon after!

For most sets, I add when I order, then update the 'date acquired' in ACM when it arrives. For pre-orders, I only add when they arrive. (Great Fishing Boat added yesterday!)
hmm, if I follow the link I cant preorder it. are there any conditions? like beeng from the US or having a certain VIP status?
edit: just read the comments above, shame on you lego :(

That feels exactly right. I wanted the original, but it was much too expensive for me. I might have been able to swing it as an 'you get nothing else' Xmas gift.
Instead, Kenner came out with the Millennium Falcon for $35. That's what I asked Santa for, and that's what I found (in late-in-the-day dramatic fashion) under Grampa's Christmas tree.
I've felt unyielding angst about the Galaxy Explorer ever since. This is the most heart-warming thing Lego has done for me personally since they ended the free kids' monthy mini-build.
This set feels cheap compared to the original (I understand that my circumstances are quite changed).
The rumors were true--and boy were they true! It's... beautiful!
@MeisterDad I, too, am father to the youngest Classic Space fan in the world of that I am certain ;)

I usually add sets once I received the order confirmation. I have a (I think) custom tag saying 'delivery pending'
Was there a limit on how many you can pre-order. I'm in Europe, no pre-order yet here. I read comments about getting 2, I may just want to get 2 and 1 for keeping just in the box. Will ordering 3 work?
I'm really curious about the choice of robot included in the set. Where the ship and rover are reimagined versions of the originals, the robot appears to be a direct copy of the droid from 6809 XT-5 and Droid.
I wouldn't consider that an iconic robot/droid from that era, the tail end just a Futuron was being released.
I am personally not a fan of Classic Space (I prefer everything after, like Blacktron, Exploriens, etc) but I am glad they are appeasing fans by recreating sets from multiple themes for the 90th anniversary.
Spaceship.

Sometimes either or. I might uncheck it as wanted when I order it then check that I have it upon reception, but I usually like to save it for when I have it on hand.

Kenner Falcon.... Legendary. Way before my time and I'd never get one myself, but I can respect that as a better purchase, er, gift

I add them when I buy them (like cash basis method accounting).
Yet, when Lego™ notifies me that they have again screwed me with my Bricklink™ Designer Program and/or other online purchases, I then go back and adjust the fact that I 'don't own' that set and undoubtedly 'never will,' i.e., working safe... kakapu... or Ferrari book.
For example, I recorded that I own the Galaxy Explorer and another Forrestmen GWP even though I just made the purchase today. To me, it's just the most basic and efficient system- just like cash basis accounting.
UPDATE: 10 sets ordered from Bricklink Designer Program- several more than a year ago. Still Nothing recieved. Yea! Thanks Lego™!

I got a lot of use out of it. Unfortunately, Kenner's plastic was not even remotely as durable as Lego. The notches on the top hatch, the flexible plastic on the cockpit, and the landing gear all quickly broke.
That's the great thing about SW Lego- it can last for a much longer period.
My broken-down Kenner Falcon was still a prized possession until my Dark Ages. Then, my SW Kenner collection ended up in the attic where it was commandeered by a scheming younger brother with an eye for resale profit. Aaargh!
@CapnRex101 ...
Regarding this set. Is the expectation that this set will also be generally available in regular sales/stores? Or will it be LEGO website exclusive? Thanks!

Not in a single order. Maybe you can place two separate orders, but I've heard that when people tried to do that with limited quantity sets, LEGO would cancel one or both orders. I don't think this set is limited in any way though, so they might not care?
Long-term, one of the things that makes LEGO better than most other collecting is that standard retail sets usually stay in production for a couple of years, so you don't have to worry about it selling out immediately and never seeing it again.

I actually traded all my Kenner SW including the Falcon to my younger brother for his entire Lego collection (which included the yellow castle). I still have all the Lego but my brother sold off all the SW for resale.
Well, it seems that "Castle" truly is the winner of the vote carried last year. As of right now (13:24 EST), there are 1520 persons who wants 10305 and 982 person who wants 10497. I know it is not an authoritative analysis but I reckon it might be a pretty good indication.
In the end, I'm very happy for both groups (I'm more for space and I pre-ordered but I might get the castle anyway). Pirates fans had the most excellent Pirates of Barracuda Bay 21322 (that may not count for them(Pirates fans) since it was an Ideas set just as the Benny Spaceship 70816 was not a proper Classic Space since it was a TLM set). Those who really lost in this voting contest are the Bionicles fans. Sorry guys (well, we don't know the year is not over yet - but I guess we would have some sort of rumours by now). I would probably buy a 90th anniversary Bionicles set - just because.
Interestingly - but mostly sadly at the same time - there was nothing whatsoever for Technic in this Lego con edition. I suppose there was no real need (as we have now seen all 2022 models but one) but still, I thought this was one of their 'quite important' theme.

Yeah all promos even double points are based on when the order is placed not when it ships, same as a backorder
Interesting to see that the LEGO Designers have, either on purpose? to stick to tradition?, or based on just not knowing at all (somehow unlikely), decided to not care at all about correct usage of navigational lights. NEO Classic Space fans had even specified the correct usage of green/red , e.g. "Landing lights should be correctly oriented on wingtips (green-right, red–left)". See also https://www.neoclassicspace.com/rules or https://harrisbricks.com/2018/neo-classic-space-rules/
Not that I personally care much, this set looks GREAT. But, it's somehow funny that LEGO has stuck to the original schema. I've never checked any other new spaceships for this though. May be worth a historical article on BrickSet...

I just hope that those ordering 2 Explorers are erring of the side of caution and ordering something else that will ship right away, even just a key chain.
From the experiences I have read, they do not "put aside" GWPs to ship when the pre-order ships, and people have ended up disappointed Even if it should count, it won't be something they can fix after the fact like double VIP.
Hooo sick! That's actually somewhat well priced for what it is imo. Definitely on board with that one.
I've only ever read about the original Lego space theme, as it was released long before I was even born. So to have a piece of history reimagined - its a must buy for me!

Oh wow I'm not the only one who pays attention to that. I thought they'd made a mistake because LEGO usually gets this right. Then I looked at the original Galaxy Explorer... and they're all wrong over there too...unless you're supposed to fly this ship in a strange way with that steering wheel.
In any case, given that the designer's goal with this new Galaxy Explorer was to create an up-scaled higher definition version of the original, I'd say it most definitely is deliberate.
It's actually through a LEGO set that I learned about these lights, 4794 had them and I wondered why so I looked it up. Green is right and red is left has been stuck in my head ever since.
There is a joke about that: 2 persons of a certain group (pick any group of people that you think for any reason that are more stupid than others - every country/state/province has their own!) are going for a flight on a small plane. One of the person says to the other person (i.e. the pilot): Wow you are so bright being able to fly this thing! The pilot responds: it is not that hard. (pilot) See the red light on the left wing? (passenger) yes. (pilot) See the green light on the right wing? (passenger) yes. (pilot) all you have to do is the fly in between. Ba-boom! ;-) (I know, I know, stick to your day job...)
Is there a rule for navigation lights on spacecraft? The "green=right, red=left" applies to earthbound water and aircraft, but does it apply to spacecraft? With no "up" or "down" in space, the convention wouldn't be useful.
Hadn't thought about that. I did a quick search and my understanding is that there are no rules for spacecrafts but some do use a similar system with red, green, and some extra lights to show the top and bottom, all to help with docking. Otherwise such lights aren't needed because the chances of two spacecrafts getting dangerously close are astronomically small. I learned something today.
However maybe we're looking at this wrong. Maybe the red green "navigation lights" on the Galaxy Explorers are actually shield generators to go with the "sensor probes" and "radar dishes" that were weapons all along.

I made a flag for "Ordered". Once I order a set, I'll take it off my wishlist and have it flagged with "Ordered". After it arrives and I verify it's in the box, I change the status to "Owned - New". Once the box is opened, I change that to "Owned - Used".
Hello to everyone.
Great model at a fair price. It makes you wonder how many space sets we could have had if it weren't for Star Wars license. In fact who said that one in-house IP excludes the other one? Price segments are different as well due to the licensing "tax", a theoretical win-win situation both for the company and the customers. Hopefully this beautiful remake could mark a trend reversal.
Technically, I would have liked a more studless design, the comparison with fan made models is unforgiving. Actually there is a Galaxy Explorer moc (completed by instructions) with the same amount of parts (less, actually) that looks much more elegant and contemporary.
Therefore the question that arises is if it is feasible to rely on snot building and studless design while, at the same time, achieving a sufficient level of sturdiness.
Lego gave the answer many times, the Jazz Quartet being the most recent one, a display set aimed to adults looking so blocky compared to its slender original version.
The beauty of frailty.

When you are "on the water", the lights also help identifying, when you have visual contact, in which direction the other ship is moving, same would hold true in space, at closer range

Same in the air: if the other aircraft’s lights are green on the left and red on the right, it’s coming towards you. The other way around (green right, red left) and it’s moving away; it may not be moving at sufficient airspeed to avoid a collision but if you change course, all will be well.
@Gataka, While collisions in space between crafts are currently so improbable as to make lights unnecessary, that may not be the case in a CS setting with many vehicles.
The reply I got from LEGO on Twitter when I asked them how come this was not available for pre-ordering in UK/EU seemed to imply that it won't be available for pre-order here.

As a rule, GWP don’t ship alone. That’s why some of us order available sets too whenever we preorder/back order.
I'm based in Ireland... So thats weird!
And good news! If you also buy 75334 Kenobi vs Vader you will have enough grey parts to build a nice matching Crater Display base. So see, that stupid set might have a use after all!

I just hope that those ordering 2 Explorers are erring of the side of caution and ordering something else that will ship right away, even just a key chain.
From the experiences I have read, they do not "put aside" GWPs to ship when the pre-order ships, and people have ended up disappointed Even if it should count, it won't be something they can fix after the fact like double VIP."
All of the backordered and pre-ordered sets I've purchased have all included GWPs. The GWP ships right away, and the other sets ship later per the production schedule. "
As a rule, GWP don’t ship alone. That’s why some of us order available sets too whenever we preorder/back order.
"
You're probably right about that, but things have changed as a result of the pandemic and all the subsequent backorders, pre-orders, and the new PaB.
I have had 3 GWPs shipped on their own in the last 6 months (Luke lightsaber, Vintage Taxi, Jane Goodall) as well as Coin holder..

"Is there a rule for navigation lights on spacecraft? The "green=right, red=left" applies to earthbound water and aircraft, but does it apply to spacecraft? With no "up" or "down" in space, the convention wouldn't be useful."
During landing and maybe when flying in “space lanes”.
In the air planes and heli’s have quite some room but are also still restricted.
Just dug this up, good call @Mr__Thrawn!

Disappointed that Adventurers didn’t make it, but I’d like to see a Classic Space set, given that all we’ve had on that front since 1987 is the Exo-Suit, Space Squad, and some minifigures. I’d like to see a large D2C version of a Galaxy Explorer or Commander or the like.

"If you zoom in, it looks like the bricks are printed, I don't see sticker lines. Hope this is indeed true."
There are no stickers on 10497 Galaxy Explorer or 10305 Lion Knight's Castle; everything is printed.
I am definitely down for one. I did preorder within minutes of realizing it was possible. This will definitely help to avoid midnight website crashes or being 2 hours early at the Lego Store on release day (assuming I did not have to work)
I hope Lego makes good use of the data it gets from all of the preorders to help realize the demand for this set. It really seems like a win-win. We get peace of mind knowing there is a set for us and Lego makes a ton of sales. I really hope pre order becomes more common, especially with the modulars too.
From the Assembled interview video 00:01:47: "No stickers" (i.e. that's all printed tile, baby)
